I've mentioned this before, but my parents emigrated from Guatemala to the US forty years ago. Thankfully, a church offered our family cheaper rent in exchange for janitorial work.
But that wasn't the only job they had. While my siblings and I were growing up, they worked multiple jobs – in factories, home care jobs, jewelry stores, you name it – to keep a roof over our heads, food in our mouths, and clothes on our backs. They've made incredible sacrifices and they deserve a dignified retirement.
And it breaks my heart to see that still, they can barely afford their Medicare supplemental.
But when I talk about protecting Social Security, when I talk about protecting Medicare, I'm not fighting just because of my parents.
I'm fighting for people just like my parents, the people who might have it even worse than they do.
I'm fighting because expanding essential programs like Medicare, making sure that people have access to basic healthcare, shouldn't be a controversial issue. But Republicans are determined to take fundamental resources like these away from the people that need them the most.
My colleagues and I are fighting back, but we can't continue working towards protecting, let alone expanding, Medicare without a strong coalition of grassroots supporters. Please, John, will you donate today?
