‘WE OWE EVERY AMERICAN THE PEACE OF MIND THAT THEIR COMMUNITY IS PROTECTED
FROM A CATASTROPHE OF THIS KIND’ (Wall Street Journal)
<[link removed]>
– Ohio senators are leading a bipartisan effort to respond to last month’s
train derailment in their state, proposing legislation that would subject
railroads to a series of new federal safety regulations and increase fines for
wrongdoing.
Senators JD Vance and Sherrod Brown, Sens. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), Josh Hawley
(R. Mo.), Bob Casey (D., Pa.) and John Fetterman (D., Pa.), introduced
legislation intended to prevent future train disasters such as the Feb. 3
derailment of Norfolk Southern Corp. railcars near East Palestine, Ohio.
The bill’s bipartisan nature could give it momentum in the Senate…

<> ‘ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS WILL BE NECESSARY’ (WFMJ Youngstown)
<[link removed]>
-- Ohio Senators J.D. Vance (R) and Sherrod Brown (D) are calling on officials
to ensure access to medical testing for people affected by the East Palestine
train derailment.
Vance and Brown sent a letter Monday to EPA Administrator Michael Regan and
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky about concerns over testing for residents.
The lack of access to testing led the senators to call on the federal
government to allocate the resources and expertise needed to find a medical
baseline for the community.
“In the coming months and years, additional epidemiologic assessments will be
necessary to identify potential longer-term negative health outcomes in exposed
residents.”

‘EAST PALESTINE NEEDS LONG-TERM INVESTMENT’ (Washington Post)
<[link removed]>
– No matter how much independent testing shows the worst of the environmental
catastrophe is behind us, East Palestine will be dealing with bad perception,
and its economic consequences, for years.
The mayor, a good man with an impossible job, told me that about half of his
constituents are terrified and half of them just want the media circus to go
home so they can get to work rebuilding the community they love. We can help,
not just tomorrow but months from now. East Palestine needs long-term
investment, from both the federal government and Norfolk Southern Railway.

PALESTINE WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN’(Associated Press)

-- Railroads including the one whose train derailed and caught fire in Ohio
would have to follow new safety rules under bipartisan legislation introduced
Wednesday by the state’s two U.S. senators, even as regulators plan to step up
inspections on tracks carrying the most hazardous materials.
The Railway Safety Act of 2023, co-sponsored by U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown, a
Democrat, and JD Vance, a Republican, and four others responds to the
derailment of a Norfolk Southern freight train in East Palestine, in northeast
Ohio near Pennsylvania, on Feb. 3, when 38 cars derailed and several carrying
hazardous materials burned.

-- Newly-elected U.S. Sen. JD Vance will co-chair the U.S. Senate’s Great
Lakes Task Force, replacing his predecessor Rob Portman at the helm of a group
that pushes to protect the world’s largest freshwater lake system.
“The people of Ohio deserve a bipartisan, whole-of-government approach to the
problems affecting our abundant natural resources. That’s exactly what this
task force aims to provide and I’ll do all that I can to ensure the Great Lakes
are protected not just today, but for generations to come,” said Vance.

Ohio needs a true conservative in the U.S. Senate. It needs someone who
understands how our
economic and government leaders conspire to make life harder for normal
Americans.
Ohio needs JD Vance.
