Today, on the 58th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we’re reflecting.

We’re reflecting on the sacrifices that Black activists made throughout history to achieve and protect the freedom to vote. The violence they endured while protesting for their fundamental rights. And the powerful movement they ignited to challenge barriers to the ballot box, which continues today.

On March 7, 1965, hundreds of civil rights activists marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, aiming to eventually reach Montgomery, to peacefully protest the denial of Black voting rights and the police’s recent murder of Black activist Jimmie Lee Jackson. Led by John Lewis of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Reverend Hosea Williams of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the peaceful protestors were met with extreme violence by local police. That brutal day became known as Bloody Sunday.

Every year, to commemorate the anniversary of the attack, a large group of civil rights and voting rights leaders from around the country gather in Selma to march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge — that same path that activists walked not long ago. Like every year, the march took place this week, but under slightly different circumstances.

The people of Selma are facing the devastating aftermath of a tornado that ripped through the city on January 12, 2023 — destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Still, local organizers are dedicated to ensuring that the march goes on.
