There's no better time to talk about voting rights than an election year, and the price of inaction is high.

After the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, the flood gates opened to voting discrimination unlike anything the country has seen in a generation. States are committing rampant voter suppression across the country, often targeting people of color.

Here's how you can fight back: Tell Congress to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019.

People of color voted in historic numbers in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, resulting in the election of the nation's first Black president. Since then, the Supreme Court has allowed states to engage in voter suppression with impunity, using tactics including voter purges, photo ID laws, restraints on voter registration – anything to keep voters of color from the polls.

The VRAA would fill in the gaps left behind by the Supreme Court's decision by enacting new regulations and oversight procedures. Most important, states with a history of racial discrimination will have to get preclearance before changing voting laws.

The House has already passed the VRAA, so let's keep up the momentum in the Senate.
