Empty shelves. Everyday foods unavailable. Other items rocketing in price…
John, the food shortages and price rises we’re seeing on our shelves right now are a warning sign of climate breakdown - and a symptom of a food system that is totally broken.
The science is clear. It shouldn’t be so hard for our politicians to understand. But they aren’t connecting the dots, so let’s do it for them:
- We’re burning too many fossil fuels and destroying too much nature.
- This is pushing nature’s cycles out of whack, making the planet hotter, and our weather more unpredictable.
- Drought and heatwaves have ravaged harvests in the past few years - lowering supply and pushing up prices. In Northern Italy, for example, severe drought last year led to a 30% drop in the rice harvest1, and pushed up prices of olive oil by as much as 50%.2
Even a food crisis right here in the UK isn’t waking our politicians up to the seriousness of climate breakdown, John.
They might be burying their heads in the sand but we want to know, how concerned are you about the climate crisis?

Lots of factors are contributing to empty shelves and rising food prices in the UK, John. But climate change is compounding them all. Scientists are already warning that England is just one hot, dry spell away from severe drought conditions returning in 2023 - threatening many UK crops.3
But the impact on food here in the UK is nothing compared to what many parts of the world are experiencing. Up to 2 million children in East Africa are already facing extreme food shortages, with severe drought causing one of the worst famines in 40 years.
If we continue on the track we’re on, the early warning signs we’re seeing now in the UK will be many times worse. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Between 21-24 April, thousands of concerned people will gather peacefully at the Houses of Parliament. We need everyone - from all walks of life - to make this the biggest, most impactful climate protest the UK has ever seen.
Be there and tell our politicians to get their act together. Together, we can still turn this around.
