John, Medicare and Social Security, two of our country’s most popular and vital public services, are under attack.
Generations of Americans have built their lives and retirement plans around the guarantee of Social Security and Medicare. Millions of us rely on these benefits to keep the lights on, pay for groceries, and access the health care we need.
But a growing number of Republican leaders are scheming to take away these vital benefits. Rick Scott has proposed sunsetting Social Security and Medicare every five years. Meanwhile, Kevin McCarthy is plotting to hold our economy hostage over the debt ceiling – in a dirty ploy to force cuts to seniors’ benefits.
Their actions are shameless and heartless. Seniors spent decades paying into these programs and now Republicans want to cut their benefits? And to think that only a few years ago Republicans were gleefully supporting Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Someone needed to take them to task – and I knew I could count on my friend President Biden to do it.
I was in the room when Joe called out Republicans for these dangerous schemes in his State of the Union Address. I heard Marjorie Taylor Greene falsely smear him as a liar and listened to the chorus of Republican boos.
And I watched as President Biden forced Republicans – on live TV – to commit to protecting Social Security and Medicare.
Joe is right – we must protect these programs for our children and our grandchildren – not allow GOP extremists to destroy our hard-earned benefits. So now, we have to make sure that Republicans are held to their promises – and that starts with grassroots pressure. Please, will you sign on to demand that Congress protect Social Security and Medicare? I'm counting on 14 more signatures from xxxxxx before midnight tonight, so add your name now!
