John —

Before I get into the details about my trip to the U.S.-Mexico border, I need you to understand the deep well of emotion I felt — that I believe everyone in this country would experience — to see firsthand the way that this broken system is impacting our fellow human beings.

It has been decades since Congress updated our immigration laws — and it's past time for change.

If you agree that we must modernize our nation’s immigration system to be safer, more humane, and more efficient, add your name to my petition calling on the Senate to take up comprehensive immigration reform today.

Every day that Republicans in Congress continue to delay and obstruct progress to score political points inflicts more pain and suffering upon people navigating a system that is not built humanely, safely, or efficiently.

When I visited Brownsville, Texas, and a migrant camp in Matamoros, Mexico, last month, I saw many of the challenges that people migrating and seeking asylum across our border face — a lack of meals and nutrition, hygiene products and services, housing, outreach, and support services.

I also saw people who are doing their best to help, like the people running Good Neighbor Settlement House, where migrant people and asylum seekers can access those services.

One of the things that makes me most proud to be an American is the values of our country. As a Black American, I’ve seen from my own family history that the story of our nation is not perfect — it is marred by violence, oppression, and mistakes, but the arc of our nation’s history is a country that tries to do better and better in living up to its values.

Modernizing our immigration system is an important way to continue in that great American tradition, so I am asking you one more time:

John, sign on to my petition calling for comprehensive immigration reform to be taken up in the United States Senate.

We have it within our power to address these issues and be stronger as a nation for it. And it is my fervent hope that we pursue that goal with the persistence, love, and compassion that our fellow human beings deserve.

With love and gratitude,

Cory
