In Texas, we have a phrase that we are quite proud of: “Remember the Alamo.”
But why do we have this?
On February 23, 1836, Mexican General Santa Anna led an assault on the Alamo Mission with roughly 1,000 troops who began mounting artillery on a group of Texas rebel fighters led by William B. Travis. Despite being significantly outnumbered and told to surrender, Travis and his men chose to fight for freedom and liberty for the Texas Republic.
Travis and all of his men - including James Bowie and Davy Crockett - perished during this battle, but it was the spark that ignited the Texas Revolutionary War and brought attention to the cause on an international stage. Travis’ soldiers knew that independence was worth fighting for and that giving into tyranny was not an option.
The Lone Star State still remains the most prosperous and free state in the Union thanks to the 13 historic days at the Alamo.
May we never forget the sacrifices of these brave souls, and may we always defend the liberties we enjoy each and every day.
