Six years ago, Alexandria’s district came together to establish Troop 6000, the first Girl Scout troop founded by and for girls living in the New York City Shelter System.
Each week, Girl Scouts meet in shelters across the city to take part in activities that help them make new friends, earn badges, and learn to see themselves as leaders. All fees, uniforms, trips, and program materials are provided at no cost.
For Troop 6000 members, not only does Girl Scouting mean fun, it means consistency and community – a network of supportive peers and adults who, even if they’ve never met before, have similar experiences and are part of the same club.

Proceeds from every box sold help the hundreds of Girl Scouts in Troop 6000 go to Girl Scout camp, earn badges, and do so many other fun Girl Scout activities.
The New York City Shelter System provides temporary, emergency housing for families. The average stay for a family in a city shelter can be up to 18 months. Remaining connected to the community and opportunities introduced to them through Troop 6000 can help facilitate a successful transition for girls and young people.
Every girl deserves a chance to reach her full potential: to have her eyes opened to possibilities for college and careers, to make loving and supportive friends, to learn from caring mentors, and to chart her own course to achieve her goals. That’s what Troop 6000 is all about.
