One month ago today, tens of thousands of lives were lost in northwestern Syria and southeastern Turkey (officially renamed Türkiye), and millions more were changed forever when a record-shattering 7.8-magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks struck in the early hours of February 6. The region has since been struck by more earthquakes, further compounding an already challenging situation.

In the immediate aftermath, it was difficult to gauge the full scale of the destruction, but now, we are getting a clearer picture of how this disaster will continue to impact the region’s most vulnerable for years to come.
