This story is still developing. A report released this week found toxic PFAS chemicals in the drinking water of dozens of U.S. cities where if had not been previously recorded: places including Miami, the New York City metropolitan area, and New Orleans.

PFAS are called "forever chemicals" because they take thousands of years to degrade. But just last week, the House passed legislation for safeguards to protect against PFAS chemicals.

With this new report, we need to move quickly to get this to a vote in the Senate.

PFAS is a class of over 5,000 chemicals that are widely used in consumer products because of their nonstick and waterproof properties. The Defense Department used PFAS for decades in firefighting foam.

The chemicals have contaminated drinking water across the United States and are linked to multiple health problems such as thyroid issues, birth defects, and some cancers. Unbelievably, there is little required testing or cleanup, leaving families at risk.
