Dear Georgian,

After a busy week in D.C., I traveled to Texas along with House Agriculture Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson and Western Caucus Chairman Dan Newhouse for a Farm Bill Summit.

We met with farmers, ranchers, and national stakeholders to discuss priorities for the Farm Bill. We discussed addressing rising input costs like diesel prices, expanding crop insurance to specialty crops, and other opportunities to support our farmers. You can watch part of the summit here.

As always, my staff and I are here to help. If you need assistance with a federal agency or have comments or concerns to share with me, please do not hesitate to call my Warner Robins, Tifton, or Washington, D.C. offices. To receive frequent updates, I encourage you to visit my website, like my Facebook page, follow me on YouTube, and follow me on Twitter.

Sincerely,

Attending First House Ag Committee Hearing this Congress

Last week, the House Agriculture Committee had our first full committee hearing this Congress to address uncertainty, inflation, regulations, and other challenges for American agriculture.

Here in Georgia, our farmers are struggling to navigate changes to the H-2A program while also dealing with rising input costs. I expressed these concerns to American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall:

Co-leading a Letter to USDA Demanding FSA Program Reform

America's farmers and ranchers should be free to focus on their farms and shouldn't have to gather unnecessary information to apply for farm programs.

This week, I co-led a letter with Western Caucus Chairman Dan Newhouse to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack urging immediate action to improve outdated and inefficient Farm Service Agency (FSA) program operations.

The USDA should streamline and simplify FSA program applications so producers can get back to supporting our nation's food and fiber supply.

Telling Corporate America Not to Invest in Chinese Technology

The Department of Defense should not purchase any vehicle that uses any battery technology from our Chinese adversaries. In a House Armed Services Committee Hearing last week, I stressed the importance of not spending U.S. tax dollars on technology in countries that do not share our interests or values.

If corporate America is going to partner with Communist China to source their batteries, then they cannot sell them to the DoD.

Successful Farming | U.S. House AG Panel Hears Industry Complaints on Regulations, Scant Crop Insurance

"Members of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee listened to agribusiness executives on Tuesday rail against federal regulations, and lobby for new markets and reinforced crop insurance programs in the panel’s first hearing of the new Congress.

With the 2018 farm bill expiring this fall, lawmakers who will shape the next version of the bill indicated they would seek to address challenges facing U.S. farmers: high costs, industry consolidation and a safety net that is insufficient to cover intensifying natural disasters."

Union Recorder U.S. Rep. Austin Scott visits Milledgeville

"U.S. Rep. Austin Scott visited Milledgeville Thursday afternoon and talked with several residents, business people and elected officials.

Scott, a Republican from Tifton, represents the 8th Congressional District. It marked only his second visit to Milledgeville and Baldwin County since the 10th District was redistricted.

Scott serves residents in 29 counties stretching from middle Georgia down the Georgia-Florida line.

One of the biggest challenges facing everyone today is the economy, Scott told a small gathering of members of the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce.

'What’s the No. 1 challenge, certainly y’all deal with it right here at the chamber,' Scott said. 'It’s the economy, correct?'"
