Folks: For nearly twenty years, Big Tech has worked without any regulations — writing their own rules to fulfill their commercial self-interests, with almost no regard for public safety or wellbeing.
For these massive companies, you are the product. They measure their success in how much time you spend scrolling, how many angry comments you leave, and how many ads they can serve you. Total tech addiction is their goal, and as a result, Americans today spend a third of their waking lives on their phones, which we check an average of 344 times a day.
The dazzling features that brought the world online have also trapped us there — more connected but more alone. More aware, but less informed. Tied to our screens as we grow more anxious, angry, and addicted every day.
We’ve seen with our own eyes how these platforms have accelerated mental health crises in our children, especially among teenage girls, but social media has also given the tyrants and extremists of the world a powerful tool for mass manipulation.
Social media is where the Big Lie caught fire. Where platforms gave dangerous election conspiracies the ring of Truth through sheer repetition. Where algorithms mixed cocktails out of pedophilia rings, Jewish cabals, and QAnon rumors – intoxicating dentists and soccer moms with a seditious rage.
Simply put: January 6th would not have happened without Big Tech’s untethered power.
It’s past time to reel in the digital platforms that hold such great power over our health, our economy, and our democracy. If you agree, add your name to my petition to regulate Big Tech today:
Last year, I introduced the first-ever legislation in Congress to create an expert federal watchdog for big tech to support parents and their children, and place common-sense rules to protect the health and wellbeing of all Americans.
The Digital Platform Commission Act, would create a Federal Digital Platform Commission to regulate digital platforms, protect consumers, promote competition, and defend the public interest, and today, I’d like you to sign on as a citizen co-sponsor.
What we do to rein in Big Tech now will set the stage to hold these companies accountable for the next 20 years. I’m working on that now, but I need your help to make it happen.
Team, if you agree that our government should place common-sense regulations on Big Tech, add your name next to mine and call on Congress to pass my Digital Platform Commission Act >>
The health and future of our children lie in the decisions that we make today, so thank you for stepping up.
Michael
