Three South American Countries Declare Hezbollah a Terror Group
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo praised three South American countries for declaring Lebanon’s Hezbollah a terror group. “We applaud the announcements of Colombia, Honduras, and Guatemala to designate Iran-backed Hezbollah a terrorist organization,” Pompeo tweeted. “It and other transnational terrorist groups remain active in the region. The U.S. continues to rally international support to counter these threats.” Designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States since 1995, Hezbollah has killed more Americans than any terrorist group other than al-Qaida. Hezbollah is an Iranian-backed terrorist network that poses a direct threat to American interests and Israel, and dominates the Lebanese government.

U.S. Hits Iran General with Sanctions Over Protest Crackdown
On Friday, the United States imposed sanctions on a senior Iranian general for his role in a brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters as it ramps up its maximum pressure campaign on the Islamic Republic. The State Department said it imposed penalties on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Gen. Hassan Shahvarpour for directing a massacre of nearly 150 demonstrators in southwestern Iran in November. “General Shahvarpour was in command of units responsible for the violent crackdown and lethal repression around Mahshahr,” U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook said. He said the designation was the result of photographic and video tips submitted to the department by Iranians. The department has received more than 88,000 such tips since it appealed for Iranians to report evidence
of repression and gross human rights abuses. The Iranian regime is under pressure economically, diplomatically, and from its citizens.

World Leaders Gather to Mark Holocaust Memorial
Dozens of world leaders gathered Thursday in Jerusalem for the largest-ever gathering focused on commemorating the Holocaust and combating rising modern-day anti-Semitism. French President Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Prince Charles, Vice President Mike Pence and the presidents of Germany, Italy and Austria were among the more than 40 dignitaries attending the World Holocaust Forum, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. The three-hour-long ceremony at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial — called “Remembering the Holocaust: Fighting Antisemitism” — looks to project a united front in commemorating the genocide of European Jewry amid a global spike in anti-Jewish violence. The forum at Yad Vashem marks
one of the largest political gatherings in Israeli history, as a cascade of delegations including European presidents, prime ministers and royals, as well as American, Canadian and Australian representatives, arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport.

IDF Says 2019 Had the Lowest Soldier Fatality Rate Ever
The Israel Defense Forces saw its lowest-ever death toll in 2019, with 27 troops being declared “killed in action,” compared to 43 the year before, Michel Yanko, chief of staff of the IDF Manpower Directorate told reporters. Though the military was obviously pleased at the low fatality numbers for 2019, which included reservists, officers, conscripts and one pre-enlistment recruit, Yanko stressed that the IDF was dedicated to making that figure even smaller. “Every death is an entire world,” Yanko said, alluding to a common Jewish saying. The past year also saw the smallest number of seriously injured casualties in the past decade, with 35 soldiers sustaining severe wounds, compared to 41 the year before.

Israeli Ice Device Destroys Malignant Liver and Kidney Tumors
In July 2012, ISRAEL21c wrote about a novel device from Caesarea-based IceCure Medical that was revolutionizing how American doctors remove benign breast lumps. The device uses minimally invasive cryoablation to destroy the tumor by freezing it rather than surgically removing it. Since then, IceCure’s ProSense system has expanded its applications dramatically. The device currently is used in Asia, Israel and Europe to zap early-stage cancerous liver and kidney tumors. IceCure recently received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to do the same in the United States.
