FL-27 Newsletter
Vol. 118, Issue #9
Dear Friends/Amigos,

Thank you for allowing me to bring you this brief weekly update. It is an honor to represent Miami in Congress.

This week, my colleagues and I were back in Washington for what was a very productive legislative week. While in Washington, I bring forward FL-27's biggest concerns before the Foreign Affairs and Small Business Committees. I was also happy to announce a major win for our district (more on that below) and know that I will continue working for you!

As always, I invite you to connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, to get the latest from Washington and from across our district.

Sincerely/Atentamente,

Maria Elvira Salazar
U.S. Representative (FL-27)
ARGENTINA MUST NOT FALL TO CHINA
This week, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing titled 'Combatting the Generational Challenge Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Aggresion'.

It is no secret that the CCP is looking to challenge us on every front, and are now doing so in our very own hemisphere. An example is the Argentinian government allowing the Chinese government to own and secretly operate a deep space station right in the heart of the Patagonian Desert-- with no oversight plan or even right of inspection. Additionally, the Argentinians are also in talks with Beijing to build Chinese jet fighters, something that would impact the region's security.

When I brought up these concerns to the officials from the Biden State Department, I received nothing but deflections from very basic questions! They didn't know what I was talking about, this is a MAJOR problem.

MY OFFICE SECURED CRITICAL FUNDING FOR KEY BISCAYNE'S COASTAL RESILIENCY EFFORTS
This week, myself and the rest of the South Florida delegation secured $500,000 in funding for critical flooding studies in Miami-Dade County and the Village of Key Biscayne!

When asked about the funding, Key Biscayne Major Joe Rasco said, "We’re excited! Our many years of hard work have paid off. First, I want to thank Congresswoman Salazar for her support throughout this effort. We will now begin to work closely with our Army Corps and County partners to develop solutions that protect our beach and bayside shorelines. The study will find ways to protect our residents, their property, and our thriving economy.”

Key Biscayne residents deserve funding to ensure its beautiful coastal community can weather the toughest of challenges. This is a big win for FL-27.
HONORING OSWALDO PAYÁ SARDIÑAS
My colleagues and I reintroduced legislation to rename the street in front of the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C. to 'Oswaldo Payá Way.'

Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas was a Cuban patriot who fought valiantly against the Castro regime to his very last breath. While the communists may have tried to silence the movement he built from the ground up, his voice still rings in the halls of Congress.
