What we know about Puerto Rican farmers.

Dear John,

Last year was a big one for us: Farm Aid provided $1 million in grants! To be precise, we granted $1,005,898 to farm and food organizations and farm families around the country. In 2020, the need is still great. We've already committed $10,000 to help Puerto Rican farmers navigate the road to recovery following recent earthquakes on the island.

We are so inspired by our 2019 grantees [[link removed]], a group of grassroots farm and rural service groups working to keep farmers on the land. We prioritized organizations confronting the farm crisis, working on solutions to climate change, building power through rural organizing, and fighting factory farms.

Farm Aid President Willie Nelson proudly signed each grant check:

“Our goal is to create real change in our farm and food system, from the ground up. Farm Aid grantees strengthen family farmers, they build communities that can support each other in hard times, and they organize people to stand up and challenge corporate power in our food system. These are essential activities that benefit everyone — eaters and farmers.”

After hearing reports of the recent earthquakes that shook Puerto Rico’s southern coast, we reached out to our partners at Visit Rico to learn how we could best offer support to farmers impacted by the disaster [[link removed]]. We heard that many farmers have been displaced from their homes and are living in tents or with family members across the island. Some have even turned their farms into makeshift shelters for neighbors.

With food distribution channels and kitchen spaces destroyed, farmers are experiencing impeded access to markets. With Visit Rico’s firsthand knowledge of the situation and suggestions on how best to reach farmers in trouble, Farm Aid has committed $10,000 to provide 20 farmers with funds to navigate the road to disaster recovery.
