John, I want to share the heartbreaking news that Common Cause’s President, Karen Hobert Flynn passed away yesterday.
Karen was tirelessly dedicated to the common good, and a fearless, persistent advocate for American democracy. She spent her entire life in public service, working for a principle that we will all keep striving for: that each of us matters, and that we all deserve a say in our future.
She served at every level of our organization, as an organizer on our National team, leading Common Cause’s Connecticut office, and eventually overseeing all of Common Cause’s work in the states. Karen took on the role of President in the heat of the 2016 election, leading us through a turbulent time for our nation while holding firm in defense of justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
While we have suffered a great loss, we remain committed to the cause she pledged herself to. Under Karen’s leadership, Common Cause doubled our membership, expanded into new states, and dedicated ourselves to empowering a new generation of democracy leaders to carry on her vision.
On behalf of the staff and Board of Common Cause, I want you and every other Common Cause member to know that with your help we will honor Karen’s legacy through our commitment to achieving the democracy we all deserve.
Thanks for all you do,
Martha Tierney, Board Chair
and the team at Common Cause
P.S. We’re inviting all members of the Common Cause community to share your thoughts and memories as we celebrate Karen’s life. And if you’d like to read more about Karen’s work and legacy, you can read our full statement online.
