This Women’s History Month, I want to recognize how women in our country still face numerous challenges, including the persistent wage gap, the fight for our reproductive rights, and intimate partner violence.

Our feminism must be intersectional, and that means recognizing and centering women who face oppression in multiple ways. For example, Black women face unjust disparities in maternal and infant health, particularly in my state of Michigan.

As a mama myself, I refuse to accept the status quo where our systems keep failing my Black neighbors and other marginalized communities.

So I co-founded and co-chair the Mamas' Caucus in Congress. In collaboration with the Black-led grassroots group Mothering Justice, we’re committed to advocating for mothers of color and their families.

The Mamas’ Caucus centers mothers of color in the policies we champion in Congress, including affordable childcare, national paid sick leave and family leave, closing the racial and gender wealth gap, and reproductive justice.

I’m also proud to be a founding member of the newly launched Congressional Dads’ Caucus, because all parents deserve a national paid family and medical leave program, affordable childcare, and policies that reduce poverty like reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit.

The expanded Child Tax Credit cut child poverty by nearly half, but corporate Democrats and Republicans let it expire.

So I introduced the End Child Poverty Act, which would provide families with close to $400/month per child, cutting deep child poverty by 70%. Children would be automatically enrolled at birth when they apply for their Social Security Number, so there would be no need for annual paperwork, and the program would include the lowest wealth families who are currently left out of the tax credit system.

We need to invest in working-class families by ensuring they have the resources they need, including by putting money directly in people’s pockets.

I will continue to advocate on behalf of parents and women, including trans women, many of whom are mothers and who face additional hurdles. With escalating anti-trans policies in the U.S., it’s more important than ever to fight for LGBTQI+ rights and gender justice for all.
