John,
While we’re fighting tooth and nail to prevent draconian cuts to critical programs such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Congress is debating on whether or not to make the Trump tax cuts for the wealthy permanent.
Legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives that would renew the tax cuts for the wealthy that were passed as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and make them permanent. The Tax Policy Center estimates this would add $3 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years while heavily benefiting the nation’s richest households.
Increasing the national debt by trillions of dollars will threaten funding for essential programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other critical services that benefit working families. Sign the petition demanding Congress reject calls to make permanent the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts for the wealthy.
SIGN THE PETITION
The wealthiest one-tenth of one percent – those with incomes over $4.5 million – would see a tax cut of $175,000 just in the first year if the tax cuts were made permanent.
Lawmakers cite the need to reduce the national debt as the reason for proposing deep cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and other critical programs. Meanwhile, they want to increase the national debt by $3 trillion in order to further enrich their ultra-wealthy donors with ludicrous tax cuts.
Our families and communities deserve better. Add your name to demand Congress reject renewing these gluttonous tax cuts for the wealthy.
Thank you for all you do to defend critical needs programs,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
