In the early 2000s, rampant steroid use across Major League Baseball became the biggest scandal in the sport’s history. But fans didn’t want to hear the difficult truth about their heroes – and the league didn’t want to intervene and clean up a mess it helped make.

With the MLB’s opening day just a few weeks away, this week on Reveal ([link removed]) , we’re taking a look back at how the scandal unraveled with our colleagues from the podcast Crushed from Religion of Sports and PRX. Their show revisits the steroid era to untangle its truth from the many myths, examines its legacy and explores what it tells us about sports culture in America.

** A Reveal Take on the News: Amazon Edition
------------------------------------------------------------

Between December and February, six Amazon warehouses have been issued citations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration over unsafe working conditions, ergonomic hazards and failure to properly report injuries, The Guardian reports ([link removed]) . A seventh warehouse in Colorado received a citation last month for exposing workers to ergonomic hazards.

The U.S. Department of Justice is also currently investigating the company for its injury rates and warehouse safety practices across all its warehouses in the country.

One of the law firms Amazon has retained to help in proceedings with OSHA and the Justice Department is Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where former Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia, who served during the Trump administration, is currently a partner. Scalia is the son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

“While at the firm in 1999, Scalia won an appeals case to strike down the OSHA high injury/illness rate targeting and cooperative compliance program under the Clinton administration and fought to overturn rules to establish ergonomic safety standards for workplaces, which Labor Department experts noted would have prevented 600,000 injuries a year,” The Guardian writes.

We first reported in 2019 that workers at Amazon were getting hurt on the job more than at other companies. Those records were under wraps – until our investigation ([link removed]) uncovered them. At the time, most of the on-the-job injuries were coming from bad ergonomics. The same type of bad ergonomic practices Eugene Scalia fought to protect in the early 2000s.

** Our Team’s Latest Impact
------------------------------------------------------------
Our shared reporting and resources spurred an investigation into California’s crisis pregnancy centers. A Reveal investigation ([link removed]) found that only a few states require anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers that provide medical services to be formally licensed as clinics. The lack of significant regulation means that for most pregnancy centers, there is no one playing an oversight role.

After the investigation was released in December, we shared our data, methodology and a reporting tip sheet with the more than 1,000 local journalists in our Reveal Reporting Network ([link removed]) . Here is the latest story that relied on our analysis: California is a haven for reproductive rights, but anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers still thrive by investigative reporter Amita Sharma at KPBS ([link removed]) , San Diego’s public media outlet.

Our documentary team is making waves in the U.S. and globally. Reveal’s “Victim/Suspect ([link removed]) ” and “The Grab ([link removed]) ” will be screened at CPH:DOX ([link removed]) in Copenhagen, Denmark, in mid-March. It’s one of the largest documentary film festivals in Europe.

Rachel de Leon, whose reporting is featured in “Victim/Suspect,” is slated to receive the award for media excellence at the 2023 International Conference ([link removed]) on Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Fighting for Change in April. She will also give a keynote presentation, titled, “She Made a Report of Rape and Ended up in Handcuffs.”

Meanwhile, “The Grab ([link removed]) ” won best investigative documentary at the 2023 Sedona International Film Festival ([link removed]) .
