Daily Docket — Friday, March 3

Here are some updates from the last few days.

Today, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) signed House File 28, which will restore voting rights to over 50,000 Minnesotans on parole, probation or community release due to a felony conviction once the law goes into effect in July. [link removed]

Yesterday, the South Dakota Legislature passed an amended version of Senate Bill 139, which would impose a strict residency requirement to register to vote. The bill would effectively prohibit anyone who moves to South Dakota within 45 days of an election from voting. S.B. 139 now heads to Gov. Kristi Noem’s (R) desk for her signature. [link removed]

On Wednesday, a Pennsylvania state House committee removed a proposed constitutional amendment requiring proof of ID to vote from Senate Bill 1. The move comes after Democrats won control of the chamber for the first time in over a decade. [link removed]

Here’s what to expect coming up.

This evening, the pro-voting side will submit their briefs in two previously decided cases, Holmes v. Moore and Harper v. Moore, that the North Carolina Supreme Court’s new GOP majority agreed to rehear. The court previously affirmed a lower court decision to block a photo ID law from going into effect.

On Monday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hold oral argument in case against Texas’ wet signature law. We’ll be covering the argument live on Twitter. [link removed]

Also on Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court will release orders in pending cases. We’re waiting on two cases, one involving congressional redistricting in Ohio and the other about felony disenfranchisement in Mississippi.

A new episode of Defending Democracy dropped today! Marc and Paige are joined by Forward Justice co-director Daryl Atkinson to discuss a case against North Carolina’s felony disenfranchisement law. Listen now. [link removed]
