Stand in solidarity with public school teachers!
|
Wednesday, March 15 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
|
DSA-LA is proud to stand in solidarity with United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) and SEIU Local 99 at the United for LA Schools Mass Rally at Grand Park on Wednesday, March 15th at 4:30 PM! We’re ready to show that Los Angeles is united behind our public schools, our teachers, and the Beyond Recovery platform.
It’s going to be a big day, and we want to make sure everybody is fed! That’s why DSA-LA is proud to announce our TACOS FOR TEACHERS campaign!
Funds raised through this initiative will be used to compensate a local taqueria and other street food vendors to run a taco station and distribute food to rally attendees. Any leftover funds will be held by the chapter to support potential future labor fights in Los Angeles! Please take a moment and contribute – every dollar helps!
DSA-LA’s material support for UTLA’s contract campaigns dates back to the 2019 strike with our Tacos for Teachers initiative where we fundraised over $30,000 to feed striking teachers across Los Angeles. The solidarity our chapter demonstrated during the strike helped establish our relationship with UTLA and Reclaim our Schools. These relationships continue to deepen through our chapter’s unwavering support for the Beyond Recovery platform and our work in lockstep with UTLA to elect Rocío Rivas to the LAUSD School Board.
The Beyond Recovery platform is a comprehensive set of demands that address the needs of students, teachers, parents, and community members. In the 2021 drafting phase of the Beyond Recovery platform, UTLA adopted the demands of our Green New Deal for Public Schools campaign into their proposals. As a result, DSA-LA has a direct interest in the outcome and success of UTLA’s current contract fight! Join us to fight for it!

Hollywood Labor’s Oscars Watch Party!
|
Sunday, March 12 @ 4:30 pm - 8:30 pm
|
Didn’t get an invite to the Dolby Theatre this year? Neither did we. But you’ve got an invite to the actual best party in town: DSA-LA’s Hollywood Labor first-ever OSCARS WATCH PARTY!
Come join your fellow lefties and socialists for a party to watch the awards, hear from workers organizing across our industry (and beyond), and learn about the secret history of the Academy Awards (spoiler: they were designed for union-busting.) Bring your friends! Bring your co-workers! Bring your neighbors! Just don’t bring your boss!
We’ll have drinks and snacks, and there’s no cost of entry! Just get your best tuxedo, dress, or plain ol’ t-shirt and jeans, out of the closest and to the dry-cleaners, ASAP! The awards start at 5PM, but come by early because doors open at 4:30PM!

How Socialism Wins: A DSA-LA Chapter Meeting
|
Saturday, March 18 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
|
How do socialists in LA build power to dismantle the capitalist class? What is power? How do we choose which campaigns to prioritize, when so many different issues face the working class? What’s the difference between activism and organizing? What does the landscape of power in LA look like right now? How do we choose a strategy to win? What role does DSA play in the Left?
These questions are at the heart of the decisions we make as a chapter. At our first chapterwide meeting of the year, we’ll be answering and discussing these questions in preparation for April’s Local Convention. This meeting is open to members and non-members—invite your friends to learn what we’re all about!

Table for Childcare 4 All on the Westside!
|
Saturday, March 4 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
|
Universal Childcare will provide play-based childcare to every worker in Los Angeles County, and ensure childcare jobs are public and unionized! We will be hosting two tabling events in two different locations on the Westside on Saturday, March 4th 11:00 AM- 12:30 PM:
🌹RSVP to join comrades at Jane Addams park in Lawndale here.
🌹RSVP to join comrades at Plummer Park in West Hollywood here.
These park-based tabling + canvass events are organized to build connections and solidarity with community members while growing an organized base of support for this popular socialist demand—a demand that puts the needs and well-being of children, parents, workers, teachers, and communities ahead of the needs of capital.

Save the Date: DSA-LA 2023 Local Convention is coming up!

We're fast approaching that time of year again to come together and democratically decide the priorities and direction of our chapter! As part of a multi-year move of our convention to spring, our 2023 local convention will be taking place on Saturday, April 22.
LOCAL CONVENTION PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
If you would like to submit a proposal, please make sure a Word doc or Google doc of your resolution is shared to the Steering Committee by March 20. Please be aware of the resolution timeline below.
March 20: Resolution submission deadline
March 22: Resolution text is shared with membership
March 29: Deadline for amendments
March 31: Final versions for debate are released to membership
April 22: Convention
We’re following this timeline to give our local time to digest and discuss the resolutions prior to voting. After release of the resolution text, there will be a week to add friendly amendments, but only proposals submitted by March 20 will be considered at convention.
We will be providing more information about how to write resolutions soon! In the lead-up to Convention, please join us for a Chapterwide Meeting on March 18 for a discussion on power analysis, theory of change, strategy, and how we win. More info to come!
