Happy Women's History Month from the DNC Coalitions & Community Engagement Team!

As we continue our celebration of amazing women during Women’s History Month, we are highlighting our phenomenal Vice President Kamala Harris. Vice President Harris IS women’s history - and as her mother used to say:‘You may be the first to do many things, but make sure you’re not the last.’” ([link removed])

Thank you to Vice President Harris for the work you have done to make history and move our country forward. We are so grateful for your perseverance and leadership!
For a look at some of the amazing accomplishments that Vice President Harris has had since taking her office in 2020, check out this great article from Donna Brazile in The New York Times ([link removed]) .

DNC Statement in Celebration of Women’s History Month

In celebration of Women's History Month DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelfordreleased the following statement: ([link removed])

“Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of all women to our country, and to rededicate ourselves to continuing to build on all of the progress we have made. From the suffragettes who fought and won the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, to the Black women who were at the forefront of the civil rights movement and passing the Voting Rights Act and the trailblazers in all fields who have fought to shatter glass ceilings – undoubtedly, women’s contributions to our country are immeasurable. This year, we’re proud that Democratic women have achieved historic milestones, including the most Democratic female governors ever elected.

“The Biden-Harris administration is committed to defending and strengthening women’s rights, and lifting up their voices. President Biden reauthorized and strengthened the Violence Against Women Act, which includes expanded legal services for survivors and support for underserved communities, and signed a bill to end forced arbitration for workers who are victims of sexual assault and harrassment.

“President Biden has also made elevating women to key positions a hallmark of his administration, as he’s appointed the most diverse cabinet in our nation’s history and nominated more women to judicial appointments than any of his predecessors. And at a time when women’s fundamental rights to make their own health care decisions are under siege, this administration has taken executive action to defend choice.

“This Women’s History Month, we carry with us the incredible accomplishments of women everywhere, and recommit ourselves to the important work ahead to fight for the advancement and progress of all women and girls.”

Antjuan Seawright, a Senior Advisor to the DNC, also wrote an amazing article about Representative Marcy Kaptur from Ohio. ([link removed]) Representative Kaptur is the longest serving woman in congress.

Anti-abortion rights activists and politicians are trying to block access to mifepristone, one of the two medications more commonly used in medication abortion in the United States, NATIONWIDE - even in states that have protected abortion access. Mifepristone is safe, effective, and has been used by more than 5 million people in the U.S. since the FDA approved it more than 20 years ago.

The consequences of this federal case could be incredibly far reaching - and go as far as taking mifepristone entirely off the market nationwide - even in states where abortion is accessible and protected. Take action with Planned Parenthood by signing up for an upcoming event ([link removed]) and pledging to fight abortion bans and restrictions. ([link removed])

As we have celebrated a couple of the women leaders in the government we want to encourage more women to run for public office. Now, more than ever, young women of color who care about their communities need to run for office. By serving as an elected official they can help ensure we have the tools to build a good life, like quality education and access to affordable healthcare.

If you self-identify as a progressive woman of color and want to run for office, Run for Something wants to help. Join them on March 7 at 8:00 PM to discuss the realities of running as a woman of color for state and local office. RSVP today. ([link removed].)

Come learn about organizations that you can easily join to get involved in civic engagement in the Washington DC Area!

The WNDC Public Liaison Committee is delighted to report that five organizations have agreed to co-host the Sisterhood in Democracy Meet & Greet. The co-host are: Black Women for Positive Change, DC Federation of Democratic Women(comprising the Metropolitan Women’s Democratic Club and the DC Democratic Women’s Club), United Democratic Women, Capital Women’s Investment Network, and the National Women’s Political Caucus. The need for collaboration and mobilization across organizations could not be more urgent. We must do what we can to protect reproductive freedoms, voting rights, the environment, Social Security and Medicare, and advocate for common sense gun safety reform.

The event will take place on Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM, and will feature light fare and a cash bar. The cost is $10.00 for guests. This is an opportunity to meet members from these organizations and explore ways that we can collaborate on projects and programs in the future.

We hope that you will join us in expanding our collective reach and influence on the American democratic process. We also hope that our commitment to educating our communities and promoting civic engagement can lead to joint programming in the future.
