Dear
Reader,
What are FIRST THINGS’ editorial priorities for 2023?
This is a question I asked but didn’t answer in my previous email. Before I do answer, though, allow me to humbly request your support for FIRST THINGS in 2023.

As a reader of F IRST T HINGS, you recognize all that goes into publishing America’s most influential journal of religion and public life.
I trust you also understand the vagaries of the nonprofit year, in which the need is often greatest in the early months. At the same time, the success of a given year is highly dependent on these first few months.
So I ask: Will you equip FIRST THINGS for success in this pivotal year by making a gift today?
Use this secure link or the button below to make your tax-deductible contribution. I would be thrilled to welcome you into our community of charitable supporters.

Getting to it: Let’s start with what we’re not. F IRST T HINGS is not a church publication, nor are we a parish newsletter. Yet F IRST T HINGS is founded upon a central proposition: Faith in God and obedience to His commandments brings our humanity to its greatest fulfillment. In 2023, we will publish essays that inform us about our faith and inspire us to cleave ever more closely to God. All is for naught if we do not put our Lord at the center, for He reigns.
Moreover, F IRST T HINGS is not a policy journal, but it is a magazine in which we hope to publish:
- thoughtful, morally informed reflection on the challenges of a post-industrial economy, which seems unable to provide a place for high-school-educated Americans
- sober assessments of the American global empire, with due attention to both its promise as a force for good in the world and the limitations of any nation
- courageous proposals for redirecting resources—and moral praise—to the once normative ideals of chastity, marriage, and family. FIRST THINGS must remain undaunted by threats to cancel anyone who dissents from the Rainbow Reich
If you hope to see topics like these addressed in our pages by today’s leading religious voices, please consider a tax-deductible donation to FIRST THINGS today.

To be clear, the above is a partial list. In 2023, F IRST T HINGS will continue our long tradition of publishing essays on art, music, literature, philosophy, and theology, essays that commend to our readers art and artifacts, books and buildings, worthy of our loyalty, devotion, and love.
This is my vision for the editorial direction of F IRST T HINGS. I’m so grateful to have you on our team, and I hope you’ll respond by deepening your engagement with F IRST T HINGS by making a gift today. Thank you!
