Emails reveal collusion between NYC Department of Corrections and ICE

Through a freedom of information law request, the Immigrant Defense Project and Black Alliance for Just Immigration obtained over a thousand pages of emails ([link removed]) exchanged between the New York City Department of Corrections and ICE. As WNYC reported ([link removed]) , the emails show without a doubt that the City agency has been violating the city’s detainer laws and actively taking steps to facilitate immigrant New Yorkers’ detention by ICE.

The emails were presented to NYC Council Members by IDP and the ICE Out! NYC coalition and at a Council hearing ([link removed]) jointly held by the Immigration and Criminal Justice committees on Feb 15th. They sparked outrage by City Council members who questioned Department of Corrections officials at the hearing. This week, Rep. Grace Meng, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and others demanded answers ([link removed]) about this collusion from the DHS Office of Inspector General.
