Dear John,

Earlier this week, I joined forces with Representative Ro Khanna to introduce the Decreasing Emergency Railroad Accident Instances Locally (DERAIL) Act. This is a direct response to the Norfolk Southern train derailment that is impacting PA-17 residents and folks all across western Pennsylvania.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been on the ground, hearing from PA-17 families about their concerns around their health and livelihoods. I’ve heard their fears over the safety of the air, water, and soil. And most of all, I’ve heard their calls for accountability.

For far too long, railroads have prioritized profit over public safety and the safety of their workers, and common-sense regulations have fallen by the wayside. The DERAIL Act will improve rail safety by ensuring trains carrying hazardous materials are properly certified, and forcing rail companies to take increased safety precautions. When big corporations like Norfolk Southern harm our communities, I will always take them on head first.

John, this legislation is a promise kept. When you sent me to Congress, I vowed to fight for our common good, to put working folks first, and to never back down from a fight. But I currently represent one of the most competitive districts in Congress, and radical Republicans and their dark money groups will once again do whatever it takes to try to defeat me in 2024.
