A Center for American Progress Report reveals state abortion bans harm women and families' economic security across the U.S.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, restrictive abortion laws cost state and local economies $105 billion annually by reducing labor force participation and earnings levels.

States like Wisconsin stand to lose even more money as some employers relocate to states with abortion protections to attract and retain top talent.

As long as we still have an abortion law from 1849 on the books, Wisconsin is in no position to grow its economy.

We know that abortion bans generate economic losses, but they often have a doubly negative effect because they’re enacted in states with inadequate workplace protections and policy support.

Here in Wisconsin, we don’t have:

❌ Guaranteed paid family and medical leave

❌ Extended Medicaid coverage to 12 months postpartum

❌ Reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers

The power to win elections now and in the foreseeable future is with pro-choice Wisconsinites and our fight for our rights.

With the future of our democracy and reproductive freedom at stake, former Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski launched an initiative building on the power of pro-choice women.

The fall of Roe v. Wade reinstated Wisconsin’s cruel abortion ban from 1849 that provides no exceptions for rape or incest and could jail or fine doctors. But we know the right-wing won’t stop there. Governor Evers has already vetoed nine anti-abortion bills that passed the GOP-controlled legislature, and when he called for a special special to repeal the 1849 law, Republicans gaveled in and out in less than a minute.

At Women Win Wisconsin, we believe the key to stopping the GOP is to activate the overwhelming majority of voters who support reproductive freedom. A recent Marquette University Law School poll showed 80% of Wisconsin voters are concerned with the change in abortion policy now that abortion is illegal in the state. These voters can make the difference in Wisconsin races that are often decided by only a few hundred votes.

Women Win Wisconsin will make sure pro-choice voters know exactly who’s going to fight for their reproductive rights and freedoms. We back pro-choice women running in Wisconsin’s most competitive races, and we’re excited to support Democratic victories up and down the ballot.
