Democrat,
March is Women’s History Month and we should reflect throughout the month on the number of ways women have contributed to and continue to make and shape our country’s history. Stay tuned to our social media accounts as we honor some of the state and national women leaders in New Jersey who do the work every day to fight for our families, our rights, and our democracy.
Next Wednesday, March 8 – on International Women’s Day – our NJDSC Women’s Caucus will be hosting a panel discussion on reproductive and maternal health that will be moderated by NJDSC’s Women's Caucus Chair, A'Dorian Murray-Thomas, and Southern Regional Vice-Chair Commissioner, Caren Fitzpatrick.
We are excited to have an incredible slate of panelists, including: Casey Haddox (Director of Advocacy, Hoboken Strategy Group & NJDSC Vice-Chair Jewish Caucus), Zoe Heath (Founder and Executive Director of Sussex County Pride), Jacqueline L. Jones (Director of Human Resources, County of Essex), Dr. Mihika Nepal (US-IMG & ECFMG-Certified 2023 Psychiatry Residency Applicant from Nepal), and Ameerah McCoy, LSW (Director of Constituent Services to Assemblyman Gary Schaer & NJYD Women's Caucus Co-Chair).

On Tuesday, Governor Phil Murphy announced his Fiscal Year 2024 budget proposal, which includes renewing the historic ANCHOR property-tax relief program, making another full pension payment, investing in public schools, and strengthening the middle class.
“This is a budget focused on the pocketbooks of our families. For the third year in a row, it has no new taxes and more middle-class tax relief. It will help hardworking families by expanding free pre-K. It will lower prescription-drug costs for seniors. And, with this budget, we will have cut taxes for our working and middle-class families, and our seniors, a total of 18 times since we began working together in 2018,” said Governor Murphy. “This budget is purpose-built to help our residents find their place in the Next New Jersey by securing their place in the New Jersey of right now. This budget is also designed to build even greater confidence in our financial direction and in our ability to honestly meet our obligations.”
Six years ago, New Jersey’s state budget was riddled with gimmicks, empty promises, and fiscal mismanagement. Governor Murphy has led our state through challenging times and put New Jersey back on a path to a strong future, turning the financial health of our state around while providing property tax relief to the middle class and investing in what matters most to New Jerseyans.

Throughout the month of March, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee will celebrate Women’s History Month with a weekly spotlight of trailblazing women leaders throughout the state. This week we are proud to highlight our Women's Caucus Southern Regional Vice-Chair, Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick.

Caren Fitzpatrick is acting Atlantic County Commissioner at Large alongside her role for NJDSC’s Women’s Caucus. She’s lived in Atlantic County all her life and graduated from Mainland Regional High School, Atlantic Community College, Thomas Edison State College, and Stockton University. Her father was a professor of philosophy at ACC, and taught her to question everything, which has served her well in her work to make sure issues most important to women are being heard and advocated for and women themselves are being fairly represented across our state.
Caren’s core beliefs include an individual’s right to equal opportunities. She believes we are all better off when we learn about one another and celebrate our differences as well as our similarities. A feminist, she supports all people having an equal voice in their lives. “We all prosper when we have a variety of opinions and thoughts regarding the decisions we make, and everybody brings something unique to the table”. We are grateful to have her working with us to mobilize other powerful women across New Jersey to make change happen.
Commissioner Fitzpatrick will also be appearing on the panel at our Women’s History Month event on March 8th [[link removed]] .

This week Eli Lilly announced that it will follow lead and cap the cost of its insulin [[link removed]] at $35 a month, a move that will benefit millions of Americans who rely on daily insulin usage for their health, including almost 700,000 diabetic adults right here in New Jersey. [[link removed]]
Every single Republican in Congress – including Representatives Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew – voted AGAINST the Inflation Reduction Act, the historic legislation that capped the cost of insulin for seniors on Medicare. Republican senators went out of their way to strip out those provisions from the Inflation Reduction Act and House Republicans even pledged to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, which would have raised prescription drug costs for millions of Americans.
The contrast is clear: while Republicans prefer to protect drug company CEOs and their exorbitant profits, Democrats are fighting to make prescription drugs affordable and accessible to anyone who needs them.

P.S. Thank you to everyone who came out to our Black History Month panel discussion this week. Black Caucus Chair T. Missy Balmir and Vice-Chair Eash Haughton moderated the discussion between Tim Alexander (civil trial attorney & former congressional district 2 candidate), Reginald Bledsoe (Director of the Essex County Office of LGBTQ+ Affairs), Athina Fassu (Chair of the Mercer County Young Democrats & Legislative Director to Assemblyman Wayne P. DeAngelo), and Jimmy Small (President of the Muslim League of Voters of New Jersey) on the topic of voting rights. The conversation was fruitful and I am excited that our Coalitions program will be continuing these important panels throughout the year.
