Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

On January 27, we will observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day by screening Claude Lanzmann's 9.5-hour documentary Shoah (1985) in its entirety. We are proud to be one of eight Goethe-Instituts in North America participating in this worldwide event; institutes in over thirteen countries outside of North America will also participate. Please also join us the following evening for a post-film discussion. An accompanying article, "The Voice on the River," has been published on our regional website for this occasion. On January 30, we will explore the concept of Vergangenheitsbewältigung (reconciliation with the past) by screening Wolfgang Staudte's The Murderers Are Among Us. Please also be advised that registration for all Winter/Spring 2020 Goethe Book Club meetings is open, so feel free to join the discussions now!

Bring your family to the 2020 Multilingual Education Fair of DC on January 25! The Goethe-Institut Washington, along with many other exhibitors, will provide resources and workshops on K-12 multilingual education. Online language courses for German teachers are available beginning in February, and applications for our Study Bridge Program 2020 are now open.

Film & Discussion | Thursday, January 30, 6:30 pm

The Murderers Are Among Us (Die Mörder sind unter uns) (1946), dir. Wolfgang Staudte

The Murderers Are Among Us was the first film shot in Germany after the end of World War II. It was the first Trümmerfilm - a term encompassing a film subgenre in which rubble-laden cities after the war were prominently featured. It was also first film to address concepts of Denazification (Entnazifizierung) and Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the past), both of which were - and continue to be - discourses approaching the topic of Germany taking responsibility for World War II and the Holocaust.

There will be an introduction before the film and a discussion after the film.

Goethe Book Club: Spring 2020

A gruesome murder in post-World War I Vienna, a pig running amok in Brussels, an entire village's secrets coming to light. This spring, read and discuss works by contemporary German authors with the Goethe Book Club. All books can be read in recent English translation or in the German original; our discussion will be in English. Led by local German professor Amanda Sheffer (The Catholic University of America), this book club focuses on contemporary fiction and will explore experiences and thoughts about the text.
