'I will always be Quiz Daddy,' says former HQ Trivia host |
Scott Rogowsky—aka "Quiz Daddy"—was the face of HQ Trivia during the mobile app's reign in 2017. People tuned in religiously to watch him quiz them with questions, crack jokes and give out generous cash prizes.
In front of the camera, Rogowsky's personality and energy drew millions of daily users into a trivia frenzy. But behind the camera were corporate clashes, cast changes, and a tragic death that turned the promising startup into a chaotic venture.
“HQ Trivia was a national sensation that captured the zeitgeist, disrupting daily habits to an obsessive degree—and then suddenly it was over in a flash,” says Amy Entelis, the EVP of Talent & Content Development at CNN Worldwide.
The sudden implosion of the mobile gaming app is documented in the new CNN Film Glitch: The Rise & Fall of HQ Trivia.
In an exclusive Q&A, we spoke with Rogowky about his experience as the host of HQ Trivia.

What was your favorite memory from hosting HQ Trivia?
It's hard to top co-hosting with The Rock and giving away $300k! Warner Bros. was sponsoring the show to promote the movie Rampage, and for some reason, the only way they could fit us into Dwayne's schedule was to fly us to London and broadcast live from a conference room in the Corinthia Hotel. He's larger than life and couldn't be nicer, looking everyone in the eye and repeating their name during introductions. He was genuinely excited to go live in front of millions and give out the largest prize purse in HQ history, and not only was he game to do all the silly bits I wrote for us, but he also nailed them during the recording. I'll never forget the feeling of being placed in his chokehold.
What was the moment you realized the app was a viral hit? One week into HQ's launch, when there were only about 1,000 people in the game, I got recognized by a player while having dinner in Soho. It blew my mind that I was getting recognized so quickly into the run of the show. Six weeks later, I would be trending on Twitter.
What do you miss most about being "Quiz Daddy"?
How can I miss something that hasn't left? I'll always be Quiz Daddy. If you bump into me on the street, I'll ask you a question and give you twelve cents if you get it right.
What are you up to now?
I'm running my very own vintage clothing boutique in Santa Monica, California, called—what else—Quiz Daddy's! And I have a few show biz related projects in development, which I'm very excited about. If you thought HQ was revolutionary, wait till you see what's possible these days... stay tuned!

CNN Special: Navalny & the Cost of Standing Up to Putin |
Tonight at 9 p.m. ET, CNN's Erin Burnett will sit down with
Dasha Navalnaya, the daughter of jailed Putin opposition leader Alexey Navalny, for the latest on her father’s case, concerns about his health, and his nine-year sentence in a Russian penal colony.
Burnett will also speak with the director of the Oscar-nominated documentary
Navalny, Daniel Roher, and Christo Grozev, the lead Russia investigator for Bellingcat who helped uncover the perpetrators behind Navalny’s poisoning and tied them to Russia’s FSB security service. In late 2022, Russia’s Ministry of the Interior placed Grozev on its "wanted" list.
The hour will also include conversations with other perceived Russian enemies, including Bill Browder, an international businessman who was banned from the country.
The critically-acclaimed, award-winning film, Navalny, is now available in select theaters in major cities and is currently streaming via HBO Max. It will also air on CNN tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET.
