Friend, happy Women’s History Month!
This month, it’s important to acknowledge the bold women throughout history who have made progress in the fight for gender equity – and countless other movements for justice – by challenging gender norms, stepping up as a leader in their communities, and even running for public office!
|
But still, women and gender minorities are underrepresented in all levels of government. This year, the Center for American Women in Politics reported that women hold just 27.9% of seats in Congress, 32.7% of seats in state legislatures, and 26% of mayoral seats. This is due in part to the higher barriers that women and gender minorities face when considering a run for office – including financial costs, family obligations, and not feeling “qualified” enough.
So to celebrate Women’s History Month – and encourage the next generation of femme political leaders to take the next step – we’re sharing three incredible organizations aimed at helping women and gender minorities run for office in their communities!
1. She Should Run
She Should Run works to help women see themselves as future candidates by tackling barriers to candidacy, providing a supportive community of like-minded women on their own journeys, and building confidence in women to take on leadership roles.
You can take part in She Should Run’s mission to help more women become candidates by asking a woman in your life to run for office! Click here to invite a woman to run for office using She Should Run’s website >>

2. Emerge
Emerge recruits, trains, and supports Democratic women on their journey to run for office. They focus on clearing the way for new voices to be heard at all levels of government, including women of color, LGBTQ+, young, and unmarried women. Emerge candidates have helped win Democratic majorities in state legislatures across the country – as well as turn the Colorado, Oregon, and New Mexico State Houses to majority-women!
You can get involved with Emerge’s work and nominate a woman to run for office on their website >>

3. Run For Something
Run For Something is focused on recruiting and supporting young, progressive leaders as first-time candidates for local office. And it’s more important than ever that we elect women and gender minorities to our local decision-making bodies – as the elected officials in our school boards, city councils, and state legislatures deliberate our fundamental rights to education, privacy, and reproductive care.
