Dear John,
With your generous support, you’ve allowed us to take the first step in an advocacy campaign best described in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as the “collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive.”
Our research has found that injustice is indeed alive throughout our criminal legal system . With each of The Sentencing Project’s research reports, policy briefs, and fact sheets, the facts are revealed:
*
More
than
1.8
million
people
are
languishing
in
prisons
and
jails,
giving
the
United
States
the
shameful
distinction
as
a
world
leader
in
incarceration.
*
Black
adults
are
incarcerated
in
state
prisons
at
over
5
times
the
rate
of
white
adults,
and
Black
youth
are
4.4
times
as
likely
to
be
incarcerated
as
their
white
peers.
These
unjust
disparities
cause
irreparable
harm
to
communities
of
color.
*
And
an
estimated
4.6
million
Americans
are
barred
from
voting
due
to
a
felony
conviction.
