I’ve been a logistician with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for the past seven years. I fell in love with my job during my very first assignment in Democratic Republic of Congo. Our team was driving to a small clinic when we encountered a huge tree that blocked the road. Instead of turning back, my colleague took out an ax and began to chop away at the tree—and I followed his lead to help clear our path.
That is MSF: when there’s a tree in your way, you clear it without question in order to help people in need. Nothing stops us from putting patients first, and when we encounter roadblocks, we get creative and adjust. Most importantly, because we’re independently funded, we’re able to leap immediately into action when crisis strikes and lives are on the line.
Unrestricted, individual donations allow us to put people first in any emergency situation. Instead of waiting for grant approval or earmarked donations for a specific country, we assess the needs and leap into action.
I witnessed the direct impact of support from our donor community while I was in Ukraine. Using my logistics background, I coordinated with local groups and authorities to ensure that our aid had the greatest impact amidst the chaos of the war. We helped deliver emergency supplies to families that were forced to seek shelter in subway stations due to heavy artillery and missiles in Kharkiv. Our teams also delivered urgent medical care and conducted mental health consultations for hundreds of people in the subway stations.
My colleagues are still in Ukraine, and MSF will continue to provide emergency support for as long as it's needed. Because not only are we one of the first—or only—humanitarian groups to act when a crisis strikes, MSF is also often one of the last organizations to leave a project or country. We deliver aid with a long-lasting impact that will benefit communities long after an emergency fades from the headlines.
