I wanted to share this incredibly moving story about Olexandra โ€” a mother of two โ€” who fled Ukraine with her children and husband and relocated to the U.S. last June.

Olexandra and her family were supported by the IRC โ€” thanks to the generosity of people like you โ€” as they resettled and began to integrate into their new community in Wichita, KS. Olexandra documented their first year of living in the U.S. on a film camera, and offered to share some of the moments she captured exclusively with IRC supporters. You can read their full story and see all the pictures she shared here. ยป

December 2022: "My husband, Ievgen, came in the bedroom, saw us, and wanted to take this picture of me and our two sons, Michael and Oleksii."

After making the heartbreaking decision to leave their home in Mariupol, Olexandra and her family fled to Poland for three months before finding out they were accepted into a resettlement program in Wichita, Kansas.
"I never dreamed about the USA because I thought I could never be here. When we had this chance, I was really happy and excited about it. For a new start."
Since then, the IRC has been helping Olexandra and her family:
"The IRC helps us to pay for our apartment and also helps us with some spending money for six months. If we have any questions, we can call IRC and say we need help."
December 25, 2022: "We had lasagne on our table, salad, and meat. This was our first American Christmas. I like it, I always wanted to come to America and celebrate American Christmas."

After 8 months in the U.S., Olexandra treasures her family's safety. She reflects on their journey this past year:
"We didn't understand that we left our house for forever. We didn't understand it. A week or two weeks, maybe. We didn't take clothes. I took only comfortable clothes because I didn't know where we will stay. Now we have a good life, we are relieved. But these memories, we never will forget it, never."
