Daily Docket — Thursday, March 2
Here are some updates from today (and one from yesterday).
The U.S. Supreme Court asked parties in the pending case Moore v. Harper, which deals with the fringe independent state legislature theory, to submit additional briefing. The briefs will address how the Court’s case might be affected by the North Carolina Supreme Court’s decision to rehear the redistricting lawsuit from which Moore originates. Briefs are due by March 20. [link removed]
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) announced an investigation into potential Open Meeting Law violations in Cochise County. Some of the violations are connected to the election director’s recent resignation and the Board of Supervisors’ decision to assign election duties to the county recorder. [link removed]
The Arizona Supreme Court agreed to consider Kari Lake’s (R) election contest in conference on March 21. At the conference, the court will decide if it will hear her appeal or not. [link removed]
Yesterday, the South Dakota House passed an amended version of a bill banning drop boxes. Now that both the state House and Senate have passed the bill, it heads to Gov. Kristi Noem’s (R) desk for her signature. [link removed]
Here’s what to expect coming up.
Tomorrow, the plaintiffs (the pro-voting side) involved in the two cases that the North Carolina Supreme Court agreed to rehear will submit supplemental briefing to the court. As a reminder, in February the court agreed to rehear a case over partisan gerrymandering and another over a photo ID law. Republican legislators filed their briefs in February. [link removed]
