As the newly named Ranking Member of the House Immigration Subcommittee, you can be sure I’m going to call out Republicans’ shameless hypocrisy about immigration.
Rep. Jim Jordan, our subcommittee’s Chair, just led his Republican colleagues on a sham search for “illegal” immigrants at the southern border, even going so far as to conduct a bogus “investigation.” This is pure performance from a party that clearly has no interest in actually reforming our immigration system or serving those who come to our country looking for a better, safer life.

When I ran for Congress in 2016, I ran unapologetically as an immigrant and South Asian woman. I ran on my story and my life and my community responded overwhelmingly to send me to the House as the first South Asian woman elected and one of only two dozen naturalized citizens in all of Congress.
For years, I’ve pursued justice for immigrants in Washington and all over our nation, starting as an organizer in Seattle and through my six years in Congress until now, serving as Ranking Member on this subcommittee.
I’ve fought unjust deportations, advocated for newly naturalized and immigrant Americans, and mobilized women against cruel family separation policies. I’ve been to the border time after time and spoken to people there — real people, not the imaginary “illegal” immigrants Republicans can’t seem to find.
I know firsthand the difficulties of navigating the immigration system in our country. I came to the U.S. when I was 16, alone, with nothing in my pockets. After 17 years on an alphabet soup of visas, I finally became a U.S. citizen — which is why I know it’s so important that we establish clear, humane, legal pathways to citizenship.
It’s clear that the Republican leadership of the Judiciary Committee has no intention to engage in good faith to reform our immigration laws for the better. This is the work that I came to Congress to do, and I will never stop fighting.
