Dear John,

Last month ISI revealed the finalists for the Conservative Book of the Year award.

Now I’m excited to tell you the winner.

The 2020 Conservative Book of the Year award goes to . . .

[drum roll]

Wilfred M. McClay for Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story!

McClay has filled a gaping void with his inspiring and compulsively readable account of our country’s history.

Think of Land of Hope as the anti–Howard Zinn. But that doesn’t mean McClay offers his own propaganda to counter Zinn’s. The Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Henninger put it well when he called Land of Hope “the most balanced, nuanced history of the United States I have read in the past fifty years.”

McClay is also a great speaker. So I really hope you will come hear him at ISI’s Conservative Book of the Year Dinner on Saturday, March 28, in St. Louis.

Land of Hope prevailed in an impressive field. The other finalists for this year’s award were Timothy P. Carney’s Alienated America, Samuel Gregg’s Reason, Faith, and the Struggle for Western Civilization, Ted V. McAllister and Bruce Frohnen’s Coming Home, Douglas Murray’s The Madness of Crowds, and George F. Will’s The Conservative Sensibility.

On March 28 you’ll find out why McClay impressed the judges.

It’s a great time to celebrate the outstanding work of thoughtful conservatives like Professor McClay. Conservatives are being “de-platformed” everywhere, from college campuses to Twitter. And mainstream book awards like the Pulitzer and the National Book Award might as well post signs that say, “NO CONSERVATIVES NEED APPLY.”

So come on out on March 28 for an evening of inspiration and celebration. McClay’s message is exactly what our divided country needs right now.

Reserve Your Spot at the Dinner
I hope you to see in St. Louis on March 28. It will be a great event!

Sincerely,

Jed Donahue
