Chris Coyne talks with Matt Kibbe, host of the Free the People podcast, about his new book, In Search of Monsters to Destroy: The Folly of American Empire and the Paths to Peace.

After a botched withdrawal from Afghanistan…

…a one-year anniversary of war in Ukraine…

…and a military-industrial complex that seems to eat more tax dollars by the day…

…we need to start asking some (very) hard questions about US foreign policy.

Thankfully, Independent Institute Senior Fellow Christopher J. Coyne and Matt Kibbe, host of Free the People podcast, do just that in this must-hear discussion about Dr. Coyne’s new book: In Search of Monsters to Destroy.
We are told that the world is full of dangers that only the US military can neutralize—that our very freedoms depend on sending young men and women overseas to fight and die.

But what if we have been actively seeking out—or even creating—these dangers in order to perpetuate the power of the military-industrial complex?

Furthermore, what is the nature of this complex? How does it get entangled with the state? Can it create any feasible path to peace? Or is its very nature at odds with the character of a free society?

Coyne challenges listeners to consider these questions and more:
“One of the things I think lovers of liberty need to think about, deeply, is this: Can you actually constrain this beast? Can you actually put limits on it? And does pulling it back, even a little bit, actually do anything, in terms of sustaining that change? Those are hard questions, but I think they’re important questions to ask.”

Praise for In Search of Monsters to Destroy

[link removed]“With In Search of Monsters to Destroy, Christopher Coyne offers readers a crisp, concise, and devastating indictment of American imperialism. His provocative proposal for a nonviolent ‘polycentric’ approach to national security comes as a welcome bonus.”
—Andrew J. Bacevich, President and Chairman of the Board, Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft; Professor Emeritus of International Relations and History, Boston University

“Why go overseas to slay monsters? Whether it’s corruption and cronyism, bureaucratic pathologies and perverse policies, mechanized terror and murderous militarism, the monsters are right here, America. Luckily for us, in In Search of Monsters to Destroy, Coyne faces them down with courage and clarity. So should we.”
—William J. Astore, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.), author, Hindenburg: Icon of German Militarism

“Christopher Coyne has long been the leading voice in economics on the folly of American military interventions overseas. In his remarkable new book, In Search of Monsters to Destroy, he gives unpopular but deeply compelling arguments why such interventions are a threat to liberal values both at home and abroad.”
—William R. Easterly, Co-Director, Development Research Institute, New York University
