Welcome back to our newsletter!
We’ve jumped right back into the action in 2023, and we’re here to update you on it all. Here’s what our team is up to, and how you can get involved.
Some may call 2023 an “off year”, but we’re really not about that here at NextGen. For the past ten years, we’ve been building the power of the youth movement, whether it’s an election year or not. We’re keeping that going — join our national team for volunteer opportunities that you can do from wherever you are.
Last month, NextGen launched our youth agenda. Over 20 progressive organizations have signed on to join us in telling Congress: Young people are deciding this country’s future, and we’re just getting started. We’re holding our leaders accountable and ensuring they take action on climate change, student debt, police reform, and more. Sound like something you agree with? Send a message with our youth agenda now.
Like we said, there are no off years. Across the country, there are tons of legislative and advocacy issues that we’re tackling head on. Here are some key issues this year:
Racial Justice: As Black History Month comes to a close, we’re here to remind you that NextGen is committed to advocating and fighting for racial justice year round. We know that not nearly enough has been done for police reform and to protect Black communities. The senseless murders of Tyre Nichols, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and far too many others should have never happened. Congress has the power to act — urge them to protect Black lives now.
Abortion: With this month being Women’s History Month, we’re doubling down on our commitment to protect our right to abortion nationwide. Recently, Republicans in Congress introduced legislation to overturn abortion rights at the national level — but we won’t let that happen. Congress has the power to fight back against Republican attempts to ban abortion, but they need to act. Write them now.
Gun safety: In 2023 alone, there have already been over 5,000 lives lost to gun violence in America. Time and time again, Americans face the fear that is far too common in our country. We deserve to feel safe wherever we are — in our classrooms, grocery stores, neighborhoods, and homes. This doesn’t have to keep happening — urge Congress to pass common sense gun safety legislation now.
You’re all caught up. Take action on these issues and more now!
NextGen America’s mission is to empower young voters to engage in the political process and ensure our government is responsive to the largest and most diverse generation in American history.
Thank you,
NextGen America
