Ahead of the 50th anniversary of Freedom in the World

this March, it’s worth taking a step back to examine the current state of global freedom and how it came to be, identify the factors contributing to freedom’s 16-year decline, and hypothesize on what can be done to arrest and reverse that decline.

Celebrating the Release of 222 Nicaraguan Political Prisoners
Freedom House celebrates the release of 222 Nicaraguan political prisoners who were unjustly detained and held under inhumane conditions. We stand in solidarity with them and their families as they embrace this momentous event.
In a video statement, Nicole Bibbins Sedaca, Freedom House's executive vice president, talks about the prisoner release, as well as the responsibility of democratic governments to aid political prisoners.

Political Prisoner Spotlight
After publicizing a link between the Vietnamese government and a company responsible for an environmental disaster, Nguyễn Văn Hoá, a Vietnamese activist and journalist, was forced to choose between safeguarding his own freedom and speaking truth to power. Nguyễn saw injustice and spoke out, and now he needs others to stand up for him, and work to obtain his immediate release.
