** Sector calls on government to ‘urgently’ publish public health grant allocation

------------------------------------------------------------

** Over 30 leaders of public health, NHS bodies and health charities are calling on the government to urgently publish next year’s public health grant allocation.

The grant, which was published on 7 February last year, is paid to local authorities from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). It is used to provide vital preventative services that help to support health.

The coalition led by the Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH), the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Faculty of Public Health (FPH), is also urging ministers to increase investment in public health and prevention.

In the joint statement, leaders across the sector have said:

“In addition to not yet knowing what the public health budget will look like for the coming year, we are extremely concerned that the delay will be exacerbated by either only a small increase or another flat cash settlement.

“Funding has been cut in real terms by almost a quarter since 2015. While the current investment is of course welcomed, anything less than inflation is in effect a cut and, as a result, it is impossible for providers to keep up, either with policy ambitions or the growing demand on these vital public health services.

“Without investing in evidence-based measures that are proven to prevent and reduce physical and mental ill health, demand on the NHS will continue to rise, sickness in the workforce will continue to increase and the economy will continue to suffer as a result.”

------------------------------------------------------------

** Writer, audio producer and presenter, Madeleine Finlay, speaks to former Guardian health editor Sarah Boseley about the rise in vaping among under-18s and what can be done to discourage more children from taking it up. ** Plans to disentangle British and EU laws will cause more uncertainty, poll says
------------------------------------------------------------

**
About two-thirds of UK businesses believe that government plans to disentangle British and EU law will cause more uncertainty and will not increase economic growth, according to a poll conducted on behalf of an alliance of environmental and public safety organisations.

The finding comes as the government’s Retained EU Law bill is debated in the House of Lords today. Under the terms of the bill, any EU-derived regulation in the UK that is not converted into UK law or revoked by the end of 2023 will automatically drop off the statute book.

The likely effect of the bill remains unclear: ministers have identified more than 3,700 pieces of EU law that would be affected, including politically sensitive topics such as environmental protection and workplace rights.

Editorial note: The retained EU law bill could have a significant impact on tobacco control as EU-derived legislation includes regulation of e-cigarettes and cigarette health warnings.

** Asked by Andrew Gwynne, Labour, Denton and Reddish

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, with reference to the Major Conditions Strategy, whether his Department still plans to publish a separate Tobacco Control Plan.

Answered by Neil O'Brien, Minister for Primary Care and Public Health

The Government remains committed to its bold ambition to be Smokefree by 2030. We are still considering the recommendations made in ‘The Khan review: making smoking obsolete' and further information will be available in due course.

Tackling smoking and other causes of preventable ill-health and mortality will be central to the Major Conditions Strategy. Smoking substantially increases the risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke and causes seven out of 10 cases of lung cancer.
