Labor hails Julie Su's nomination as Labor Secretary

Saying "There's no one more dedicated and qualified to defend the fundamental rights of working people," AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler hailed the nomination of Julie Su to be the next secretary of labor. "It's her life's work," said Shuler. "Su has distinguished herself as a principled fighter for the basic rights of every worker, no matter where we're from or what kind of work we do," said Shuler. "At this pivotal moment in history, that's precisely the leadership America's working people need in their next secretary of labor." Other weighing in with strong support for Su included APALA, the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, CLUW, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, ATU, AFA's Sara Nelson and more.

Kayla Mock UFCW 400: Kayla Mock is the Political and Legislative Director at the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 400, which represents over 35,000 frontline and essential workers in grocery, retail, healthcare, meat packing and processing among other industries. She is a 23-year rank and file member who started on the shop floor at Giant in Manassas, VA as a food clerk. For the last 12 years, Kayla has worked on staff with UFCW Local 400 in a variety of positions such as membership education, new organizing, contract negotiation, and most recently, political organizing. When she's not putting up with politicians, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, gardening, singing loudly, animal rescue, and flying kites.


Sam Epps UNITE HERE 25: As Political Director for UNITE HERE Local 25, Sam manages the legislative, electoral, and government relations for the local. He's Co-Chair of Committee of Political Education (COPE) for the Metro Washington AFL-CIO, and a member of the VA State Federation Political Steering Committee, VA State AFL-CIO. He's also advised the Baltimore City Delegation on legislation, city policies, and political developments, managed and staffed the Baltimore City Delegation's Annapolis and Baltimore City legislative offices, and trained grassroots advocates in the legislative process.


Other 2022 COPE Award winners: Lisa Wallace 1199 SEIU; ATU 689 2022 GOTV Member to Member Program; AFSCME District Council 3 2022 GOTV Member to Member Program.

This year's OUTSTANDING ALLY AWARD winner is the Prince George's County Education Association.

Black Women Workers Connecting Globally to Advance Racial, Gender Justice

Union leaders and members of the Black Women's Roundtable shared strategies for advancing racial and gender justice through labor movements worldwide at a recent Solidarity Center event, Black Women's Power: Advancing Partnership Between Unions and Global Racial Justice Movements. "We have to unite our struggles, our fights, especially women, who suffer discrimination because of their gender, their color," said Agripina Hurtado, former president of the Afro Colombian Labor Council in Colombia. "We have to be agents of change to transform our society." Members of the Black Women's Roundtable, part of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, were joined by the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) and the Global African Workers (GAW), along with Sarah McKenzie, Solidarity Center program coordination director.
