AG Garland Testifies Before Judiciary Committee; Gets Shredded for DOJ Response for Threats Against SCOTUS Judges
NBC: Attorney General Merrick Garland’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday grew heated when Republican lawmakers grilled him on the prosecution of protesters on both sides of the abortion fight ( NBC). Washington Examiner: Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) got into a heated exchange with Attorney General Merrick Garland as the Texas senator accused the Justice Department chief of failing to protect conservative Supreme Court justices after they voted to overturn Roe v. Wade last summer. Cruz accused Garland of “sitting on (his) hands” while protesters gathered at the homes of Supreme Court justices who voted in favor of overturning Roe. The Texas senator specifically pointed to the pro-abortion rights group Ruth Sent Us, which leaked the home addresses of the justices online ( Washington Examiner). Benny Johnson: Lion Ted Cruz MAULS AG Garland to absolute SHREDS for ignoring threats against Supreme Court Justices ( Twitter). Katie Pavlich: Last summer, a man was arrested outside the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh with the intent and tools to assassinate him. AG Garland on Fentanyl: “It's an epidemic that's been unleashed on purpose”
Fox News: Attorney General Merrick Garland says Mexican drug cartels unleashed the fentanyl crisis on the U.S. “on purpose,” and urged the Mexican government to “do more” to combat drug trafficking. Garland made the statement while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., pressed Garland regarding the opioid epidemic, highlighting that fentanyl is responsible for more deaths than guns and car accidents. “It’s a horrible epidemic, but it’s an epidemic that’s been unleashed on purpose by the Sinaloa and the new generation Jalisco cartels,” Garland said ( Fox News). Last year, more than 379 million doses of fentanyl were seized, which was enough to kill every American. Newsmax: South Carolina Sen. House Passes Inflation Transparency Bill
Just the News: The House on Wednesday passed an inflation transparency act introduced by New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik with the support of 59 Democrats. The bill would require the president to publish the inflationary impact of executive orders before they are enacted in response to President Joe Biden’s policies, said Stefanik, the bill sponsor. The bill passed 272-148, with 144 nay votes coming from Democrats and 4 coming from Republican ( Just the News). Townhall: Since taking office, Biden has signed a whopping 107 executive orders, which Republicans say have made prices skyrocket. The bill would mandate the Council of Economic Advisers and the Office of Management and Budget to publish a report for any executive action with an estimated economic effect of at least $1 billion. The bill’s proposal comes two weeks after the Labor Department announced consumer prices increased by 0.5 percent in January and 6.4 percent annually ( Townhall).

House, Senate End Biden’s Attempt to Push ESG Investments onto Seniors
Spencer Brown: The U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted to kill the Biden administration’s attempt to push ESG investment practices on millions of American retirement accounts through a new rule from the Labor Department. By a vote of 50-46, Republicans were joined by Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) to pass the joint resolution that was approved by a bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives on Tuesday ( Townhall). Chad Pergram: The House approved the repeal of the rule yesterday. This could tempt President Biden to use his veto pen for the first time. The investment rule fight is a proxy war for the GOP taking on liberals promoting environmental interests and social equality in investments ( Twitter). Just the News: The bill comes as major asset managers such as Vanguard have bucked their ESG pledges citing fiduciary duty to their investors. Others, such as ESG proponent BlackRock, have sought to court Republicans amid their push to curtail so-called “woke” capitalism ( Just the News).

Washington Examiner: U.N. nuclear watchdogs have detected uranium enriched to 83.7%, according to a new confidential report from the International Atomic Energy Agency. That finding raised the question on Capitol Hill of whether Biden will intervene in time to thwart Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. President Joe Biden ’s administration is “very, very” worried by Iran’s progress toward nuclear weapons-grade uranium, a top diplomat acknowledged Wednesday ( Washington Examiner). Axios: A top U.S. defense official said on Tuesday that Iran will need only 12 days to enrich enough weapons-grade uranium to build one nuclear bomb, though the U.S. has also said it doesn’t believe Iran has made the decision to resume its weaponization program ( Axios). Senators Look to Raise Retirement Age, Rework Social Security
Daily Mail: A group of bipartisan senators is quietly meeting to retool Social Security before funds run out in 2032. On the table is gradually raising the retirement age to 70 and creating a $1.5 trillion sovereign wealth fund, which would invest in stocks. That fund would be separate from the already existing Social Security Trust Fund. If it underperformed, Social Security would be shored up by increasing the maximum taxable income and payroll taxes ( Daily Mail).
