Dear Members:

I wanted to let you know that I’ve decided to step down as OLCV Executive Director to pursue a new opportunity. I know, it’s big news and a big change for OLCV. But in life, sometimes it’s good to leave when you’re at the top of your game and make way for a graceful, smooth transition.

When I applied for this job in 2011, I said in my cover letter that the opportunity to lead OLCV would be a dream come true. I can say that it has been that and more. This has been the best job I’ve ever had, and I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity, the support from members like you, and the friendship of all the great people who have worked at OLCV, as well as our many partners and allies. Leading this organization has been an honor and the highlight of my career, and while leaving is bittersweet, I’m also excited for my future as well as the future of OLCV.

My goal in leading OLCV was always two-fold: first, to build political power for the environmental community, and to use that political power to dramatically move Oregon forward on climate change, as well as protecting clean air, our water, our forests, and Oregon’s unique quality of life.

Over the past decade, OLCV played a key role in electing Governors Kate Brown and Tina Kotek, winning back the Legislature, and building strong pro-environment majorities. And we translated that political power into strong policies. Oregon created marine reserves, took on toxics in children’s products, and protected the Elliott State Forest. On climate, Oregon created the strongest clean fuels program in the country and we were the first state to ban the production or import of coal power. In 2020, after two years of walkouts, Gov. Kate Brown issued an executive order on climate, directly regulating our carbon emissions and putting us on track to meet our 2050 greenhouse gas reduction goals. To top it off, in 2021, we passed legislation to move Oregon to 100% clean electricity by 2040.

We wouldn’t have done any of that without the hard work and support of our many partners and allies. But more importantly, we wouldn’t have done it without you. I hope you’ll consider making a contribution to OLCV to help ensure that the organization remains strong and at the top of its game during this transition. [[link removed]] Because as long as members like you continue to support it, OLCV will remain strong and continue to play our important role in the constellation of advocacy groups. I’ve appreciated your support for OLCV, and I hope you’ll continue – as I will – as an active supporter and contributor.

Transitions are always hard, but we’ve been planning for this day, and we have a plan in place for going forward. Our Deputy Director, Lindsey Scholten, will take the reins as our Interim Executive Director on April 1, 2023. I’ll move to the background to help with fundraising for our Annual Event, provide support and continuity during the transition process, and help our lobbying team with advice through the end of the Legislative Session. OLCV has an incredible team, and our work will continue through the transition.

I hope I’ll see many of you at the OLCV Annual Event on April 28, but if not, I’m sure I’ll see you in the future.

Yours,

Doug
