Remembering a Friend and a Leader
Dear John,
We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Eva Alvarez, a leading voice for immigrant families at PIF partner Michigan Immigrant Rights Center. Eva was a valued member of our coalition. Born into a Washington State farmworker family, she started working the fields as a teenager - an experience that led her to advocate fiercely for immigrant rights. Eva had presented just last week during a partner webinar on the Medicaid unwinding and was deeply committed to the cause of improving immigrant families’ access to health care and social services.
Michigan advocates have coordinated a couple of opportunities to celebrate Eva. They’ve established a lovely page [[link removed]] where you can share memories of Eva or offer condolences, as well as an opportunity to contribute [[link removed]] to the costs of transporting her body home to Washington state.
We join our Michigan partners in mourning her passing and commit to continuing the work she valued so deeply.
Spotlight: Immigrant Child Labor
Like so many of you, we were appalled by the New York Times’ migrant child labor exposé [[link removed]] .PIF is in contact with our members and partners who lead in the child advocacy space and will be passing along resources and other information they provide in the coming days. This horrific story also underscores the importance of our work. So long as immigration status is used to deny people the basics that every child and his or her family needs, that policy exposes the most vulnerable to exploitation.
Presentation Opportunity: CMS Health Equity Conference [[link removed]]
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is holding its first Health Equity Conference June 7-8. And they’re accepting research presentation proposals, aligned with CMS’ health equity framework [[link removed]] , which includes “pillars” related to policy inequities, language and cultural barriers, and other issues relevant to immigrant families.
