Hi, John,

What do 16-year-old Sidney Keys III of Georgia and Dr. Aja Lans, a historical archaeologist and postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, have in common?

Both are winners of Color Of Change’s 2023 Black History Now Awards.

The awards honor local and national leaders whose daily work and efforts prove why Black history is so important and essential to telling America’s truth. Seven people — educators, advocates, policymakers and entrepreneurs, including Keys and Lans — were presented with the awards during a lively 50-minute virtual ceremony Monday, Feb. 27, hosted by broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien.

Missed the ceremony? Don’t worry, check it out on Color Of Change’s Facebook page or YouTube channel.
Keys is the founder of “Books N Bros,” a subscription-based book club he started six years ago with his mother that encourages literacy among Black youths through African American literature.

Lans has contributed to the preservation of Black history with publications that integrate Black feminism and Critical Race Theory with bioarchaeological investigations. Her interests include the ethics of museum collections, the objectification of human remains and the history of race.

The Black History Now Awards program also featured Color Of Change President Rashad Robinson; Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw; “The 1619 Project” creator Nikole Hannah-Jones; and bestselling author and COC Board Chair Heather McGhee.

The work of all the winners takes on even greater significance in the face of current attacks by those who want to erase or eliminate Black history from classrooms, libraries and textbooks. At Color Of Change, we are dedicated to uplifting and celebrating people whose lives and work reflect a more accurate and honest history of this country — and will bring us closer to achieving racial equality and justice.
