The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced today that the Doomsday Clock has moved 20 seconds closer to midnight. There are now just 100 seconds left on the clock until humanity is destroyed by a catastrophe of its own making - whether from disastrous climate change or nuclear war.
The clock is a metaphor for threats to humanity from unchecked scientific and technological advances. Its new position is the closest the clock has been to midnight since the atomic scientists' annual assessment began in 1947.
Why we need your solidarity
But at the very moment the world needs civil society to rise up to agitate for peace and nuclear disarmament, organisations like CND are facing attacks on our right to protest and political engagement.
We learnt last Friday that CND and other peace NGOs have been placed on a police counter-terror list along with neo-Nazi and other extremist groups.
Wear your CND badge with pride
How did we end up in a situation where the iconic CND symbol - internationally recognised as a peace sign - ended up in a document used as part of training for Prevent, the anti-radicalisation scheme designed to catch those at risk of committing terrorist violence?
This is an attack on our civil liberties that we must resist. We instructed our solicitors yesterday to take action. CND and other non-violent groups must be removed from the list and an apology issued.
We urge everyone with a CND badge or item of clothing to wear it in defiance of the guidance. If you join CND we will send you a badge and use the money to resist this assault and campaign for a world without nuclear weapons.
