As we close out Black History Month, I’m worried about its future. And I can’t help but wonder if this will be the last one.
While Black history is a crucial part of the American tapestry every day of the year, we take one month to specifically commemorate it. But with the GOP waging a war against truth, I wonder if we’ll be allowed to celebrate Black history at all in the future.
Republicans certainly don’t want us talking about Black history. They try to whitewash the founding of our nation, our country’s history of slavery and servitude, and the experiences of our Black ancestors who had to fight for centuries to earn the recognition of their basic rights.
If we allow Republicans to win the day with their “anti-woke” politics (even though they can’t define woke) and their “anti-CRT” rhetoric (even though they can’t explain what critical race theory actually is), then Black History Month will be — well, history.
So as you receive emails asking you to donate during the end of the month, remember that if Republicans get their way, this isn’t just the end of February; it could be the end of Black History Month altogether.
