Remembering the Dutch connections

A new touring exhibition will be arriving soon at Bonegilla Migrant Experience.

We're proud to host the temporary Dutch Connections exhibition on loan from Albury LibraryMuseum.

The new display will feature objects from Albury LibraryMuseum's Bonegilla collection and explore just one of the many nationalities that came through Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre between 1947 and 1971.

A pictures tells a thousand words ...

The Bonegilla Migrant Experience staff and volunteers are avid readers.

Enjoy our must-read recommendations for 2023, all available for purchase in our Welcome Centre:

Hollie (Co-ordinator) - Shaun Tan: Sometimes words aren’t needed to explain very real human experiences, and Shaun Tan’s wordless graphic novel, The Arrival achieves just that.

It follows the fantastical travels of a lone migrant displaced from his homeland and his efforts to find stability in a new land.

Fear of the unknown, separation from family and a yearning for home all feature prominently in amongst haunting scenes of other families trying to escape gloomy, war-torn cities.

In one scene, the foreign-language migrant tries to communicate with an official filling out his migration paperwork - which bear a striking resemblance to our own Bonegilla ID cards.

Children and adults alike will be mesmerised by this touching story filled with unusual critters, stunning illustrations and wistful characters. The best part? You get to make up the words.

Don't miss this great opportunity

Dates are available throughout 2023 for your next guided tour, function or private booking.

The second half of 2022 saw our popular school groups and workshops make their return after two years and we're looking forward to a busy 2023.

Contact the Welcome Centre to secure your dates now.

We are running out of room but we have a solution

Some of the more recent visitors to our site will have noticed The Arc memorial sculpture is looking a little on the full side.

Following our 75th Anniversary in November 2022, we were inundated with plaque applications - thank you to everyone who has supported the site in this way throughout the years.

To ensure these new and future plaques can continue to go on display, our maintenance team has erected a temporary wall until we get an additional arc memorial sculpture to match the original.

Thinking of purchasing a plaque for Mother’s Day? Get your plaque application in by Thursday, March 30, 2023 to be sure it’s up in time for the big day.

Ring, ring ... we are calling out for help

Calling all codebreakers.

With the help of the National Archives of Australia, the team at BME has become quite skilled at recognising the shorthand codes used by the immigration secretaries on the Bonegilla ID cards.

There are some that still stump us though, particularly the employment codes. We’re hoping someone out there remembers working on the cards and can help us decipher the codes.

Email [email protected] if you or someone you know has information.
