John,
Ten years ago this week, fair democracy in America took a severe blow. The Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. F.E.C. that corporations could spend unlimited amounts of money to influence our political process. I’m proud to support End Citizens United and to work with them to get corporate money out of politics.
But it won't be easy. The powerful interests we're up against are pushing endlessly to bolster the politicians who support their agenda -- such as my opponent Lee Zeldin, who’s taken half a million dollars of corporate PAC money -- and will spend heavily to defeat their opponents.
To help fix our democracy after ten years of Citizens United, will you donate $10 (or more!) to my campaign? We need to reject representatives who rely on corporate PAC donations and elect champions for campaign finance reform.
The Supreme Court's decision gave corporations a green light to say anything they want in political advertisements, as many times as they want. Facts have been thrown by the wayside, and special interests have been able to slow progress on everything from gun safety legislation to critical environmental reform.
When we let the truth and facts become blurred, it's easier for the Trump administration to stack our government full of appointees who deny science, ignore data, and are only focused on implementing their extreme, special-interest driven agenda.
And in the face of unlimited corporate spending, it's harder for citizens to hold our leaders accountable. That's why in this election, we'll need an unprecedented level of grassroots support to get our message out and win.
I'm refusing corporate PAC donations because I'm committed to a campaign that reflects the interest and values of the people in our community.
2020 is our year to restore transparency and accountability to our politics. And races like ours are must-wins.
So please stand with me! Your donation will help us fight back against the barrage of attacks that we know are coming from the deep-pocketed interests behind Zeldin.
Thank you,
Nancy
Nancy Goroff is a scientist and Suffolk community leader. She’s running for Congress in New York’s 1st District to combat climate change, make healthcare affordable, protect a woman’s right to choose, and end the gun violence epidemic. Will you make a grassroots donation to help her win in this toss-up district?
